My dissertation research is an ethnographic study of cryptocurrency and blockchain enthusiasts in South Korea who forge communities informed by their interests in these technologies. Based on 2 years of fieldwork and over 130 semi-structured interviews with an array of actors, including community leaders, software developers, investors, entrepreneurs, and government officials, I explore the strategies and schemes enthusiasts deploy to embed cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology into their lives and, by extension, attempt to embed it across society.
More to come.
